Espero Fund contributes to the TomMcCabe Fund for refugee youth

The Espero Fund recently contributed to the TomMcCabe fund for refugee youth. The fund was initially set up by Tom McCabe who donated his PlayStation after hearing the plight of a refugee family which arrived in Australia after 14 years in a refugee camp. Tom sadly passed away in March 2005 at the age of 19 but his legacy lives on in the fund which is now administered by MiCare Ltd. The fund assists young refugees with settlement in Australia.

Espero assists with funding for ‘The Plate Up Project’

The Espero Fund has provided funding to StreetSmart Australia for a pilot program, ‘The Plate Up Project’, run by the Melbourne Homelessness Collective.

As part of their mission to support people experiencing homelessness, the funding will be used to deliver hospitality industry training for women who are homeless because of domestic violence and abuse.

Espero helps with funding for Carlton Neighbourhood and Learning Centre

The CNLC aims to provide training and employment for young people from new migrant backgrounds and they are a place of gathering for the residents of the housing estate in Carlton (predominantly people of refugee / new migrant backgrounds).

Espero assists LACW with philantropic sector project

The Law Advocacy Centre for Women required support to help them to develop several pieces of work that will progress and strengthen the organisation’s capability to engage with the philanthropic sector to assists them to meet their strategic goal.

Visit to Uai Lili village in Timor Leste

Recently we were lucky enough to visit a carpentry program in a small village in Timor Leste which Espero Fund sponsored last year through the Australian Marist Solidarity Fund. It was heartening to see that many young men benefit from learning carpentry skills in a country where there is high youth unemployment and not many opportunities to learn these basic skills.

Espero Fund assists with carpentry skills training in East Timor

Espero made a recent donation to the Uai-Lili Carpentry training project in East Timor. The project, which is run by Australian Marist Solidarity, teaches carpentry skills to young men and women in the village who are unemployed and unskilled.

The money will be used to buy wood and the repair and maintenance of carpentry tools.

Espero supports pilot project Angel Place

Espero Fund has provided start up funding for a pilot project which matches homeless people and children with empty hotel rooms in Sydney or Melbourne.

Each night more than 100,000 Australians experience homelessness - around 20,000 are young children under 12 years of age. At the same time, each night in Australia more than 20,000 unsold hotel rooms remain empty.

The Angel Place Project is a not-for-profit social enterprise whose vision is to align the supply of unsold hotel rooms with the needs of those at risk of homelessness. The project will establish a pilot hotel – Angel Place - in either inner-city Sydney or Melbourne, where each prepaid room will release a room at Angel Place for someone in need. Your decision to purchase a room at Angel Place will give hope to the homeless. The primary target group which Angel Place Project aims to assist is families with young children.

Espero provides further support for HRLC

In February Espero (with a number of other philanthropic organisations) committed funding for three years to support the HRLC Asylum Seeker and Refugee Rights Unit.

This unit was created within the HRLC to bring about systemic change in the way the government in Australia deals with refugees both onshore and offshore.

Espero funds Roomers Magazine

In January Espero provided funding for creative writing workshops for people who live in rooming houses in or near St Kilda. Once a week these workshops are held and the resulting work (short stories, poems,art etc.) is collated in the ‘Roomers Magazine” which is published four times a year.
