Espero provides funds for asylum seekers to obtain their driving licence

The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre until recently ran a successful program for asylum seekers to getting driving lessons which were mainly provided by volunteers. Unfortunately the program was discontinued due to a lack of support and funding. Espero Fund has provided funding so a number of asylum seekers were able to get additional driving lessons in order to be able to sit their driving test.

Espero assists Refugee Legal with TPV clinics

Espero Fund, in collaboration with two other philanthropic organisations from the Australian Communities Foundation, assisted Refugee Legal with the funding of running Temporary Protection Visa clinics for people seeking protection in Australia who arrived by boat without a visa.

Espero helps local South Sudanese basket ball teams participate in the South Sudanese Australian National basket ball Competition

In July Espero Fund assisted Victoria Police’s Fitzroy Youth Resource Officers with financing a trip to Frankston for five local basketball teams to attend the South Sudanese Australian National Basketball Competition . The local City of Yarra Sudanese team “Wild Beasts” sent five teams including one girls team. The men’s ‘open category’ Wild Beasts team won the grand final.

VU Science Experience

Once again Espero Fund has made a distribution to the Victoria University Foundation. This is our second distribution to support the VU Science Experience following on from its success in 2014.

The program assists year 9 students of disadvantaged high schools in the western region of greater Melbourne by stimulating their interest and involvement in science.

The program culminates each year in early December in a Science Festival.

A successful 2014 for Espero Fund

In December we made two final distributions for 2014. The Human Rights Law Centre has set up a Refugee Rights Unit, which Espero, along with a number of other funds, has agreed to sponsor for three years.

We also provided funds to the Port Phillip Community Group to run ‘Roomers Workshops’. These workshops assist people living in rooming houses in St Kilda, through running creative writing workshops.

All in all, a successful 2014 for our newly established fund. May we take this opportunity to thank our donors and the ACF for managing our fund and wishing you all a happy Christmas and best wishes for 2015.

Espero assists Human Rights Law Centre

In March Espero Fund co-sponsored the HRLC in its participation in an urgent and important National Court inquiry in Papau New Guinea that will hold an inquiry into whether the human rights of asylum seekers detained on Manus Island are being breached.

Distribution to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre

In February 2014 Espero Fund made a distribution to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre to assist with the integration of asylum seekers into society.

The ASRC which is based in Melbourne has grown to be Australia’s largest asylum seeker organisation. With 32 paid staff and nearly 750 volunteers delivering services to over 1,200 asylum seekers at any one time through programs such as material aid, health, legal, counselling, casework and foodbank. In its first 9 years the ASRC has assisted over 7000 people seeking asylum, provided more than 1 million hours of free help and turned no one in need away. All of this has been achieved with almost no government funding and more than 95% of our funding coming solely from the community and philanthropy. The ASRC does it all – from direct aid, welfare and medical care, to strengthening families and communities through community development, to campaigning for social change.
